Ball is in one's court

Meaning:

If it's somebody's turn to do something, or if somebody must perform the next action in a situation, we can say that the ball is in their court. This idiom comes from the game of tennis. In the game of tennis, when the ball comes into your court, you must hit the ball back. We often use this idiom when there is a situation where action is going back and forth between people or groups of people. It is commonly used in negotiations.

Example sentences:

1. The ball is in your court.
2. The ball is in my court now.
3. We must wait until the ball is in our court.

Example dialogue:

Two friends are talking about one friend's offer to buy a house.

A: We made an offer to buy that house on Maple Street.
B: Really? What's next?
A: Now the owners have to decide if they want to accept the offer.
A: I see. The ball is in their court now.
